The way i see it if your defending an you over power then the same rule should apply as when you attack.

to avoid the cheating issue. base it on amont of damage done to the defender.
less than 5% you get drek
5 to 30% you recieve a nominal increase
30 to 60% you recieve a slight bonus
60% ad above you get the extra bonus

these are just % im throwing out.
I figure by doing it this way you eliminate the issue of someone helping a friend to level by unequipping or using alower lvl weapon they do not nomrally use.

its not perfect but should help balance things out.
