your body needs to have REM (rapid eye movement) to function properly, which i believe is 4+ hours sleep, thats the time it takes for your body to properly rest
Leonardo DiVinci believed that if you sleep for about 20-30 minutes once every 3 hours or so you get all the sleep your body needs to function. You have to be very rigid with your schedule though and not break it for anything. Thats how he lived and one cousin-in-law of mine does that too.
your cousins state of mental health can't be too good then without proper sleep you basically go crazy. take meth heads for example its more the lack of sleep they get than the drugs that makes them as farged in the head as they are.
Polyphasic sleep patterns are actually not healthy for that reason. You still end up with 7+ hours of sleep, you just spread it out. The main problem is that your body doesn't have the time it needs to grow and develop, and it is stressful. Won't make you go crazy, though.
@awesomo - There are also sleep patterns in which you "catnap" for 20-40 minutes at periodic times with a more central nap at nighttime for about four hours.
