I noticed that next to the price of weapons in the stores there is also a price for trade-in. Does that mean that your current weapon is traded in when you buy a new one? or are you given a choice?

No,

that is the money you sill recieve if you click on the "sell" tab on the inventory screen.

It's the price the NPCs give to vaporize it into nothingness,
you don't have to sell old items when you get new ones,
you can keep them in storage,
sell on the item market, or via the trade forum (recommended)
or take the measely trade in value (not recommended)

That is what I was hoping would be the answer. I don't want to trade it in. I would like to be able to see it on the trade forum.
