I did a past year search and it didn't yield the answers that I was looking for. Does anyone know for sure what it does exactly? How does it affect power level. Is it even worth it? Does it work for defense, or during a gang war? I hope there is a hard and fast source to this.

Maybe I didn't see enough clarity in this post by Zen:

Gang Combat Rating is a replacement of the old gang combat bonus. This number is added to your combat effectiveness when performing an individual player v. player attack. It has no effect on war capability.

Doesn't affect your power level. I just went from X to none and I still get crappy xp even if all players do more damage and hit me more often than before.

You won't see much difference with only 1 but going from none to say 5, you will see a decent improve in your performances in pvp battle.

I never paid much attention to that detail but knowing Zen and reading it today, it says it affects when "performing a pvp attack", so it must not apply to when you get attacked I guess?

Doesn't affect gang war at all.
