500 to the power of 2 would = 500*500
To me it just looks like "the starting points needed to rank up * (times) the rank you are going for minus 1":
like engineer going for rank 2 is 500
going for rank 3 is 500*(rank you want-1) = 500*(3-1) = 500 * 2 = 1000
going for rank 4 is 500*(4-1) = 500*3 = 1500
going for rank 5 is 500*4 = 2000
going for rank 6 is 2500, etc
going for rank 11 is 500*(11-1) = 500*10 = 5000

so if you are rank 1 with 0 points and you wanna know how much to rank 4:
500 * (1+2+3) = 500*6 = 3000 until you hit rank 4
for total points until rank 11:
500 * (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10) = 500*55 = 27,500 total points t get to rank 11
