So, I messed around with it today. When I have both ranged and melee equipped, my highest hit is 39 points. With just the melee equipped, my highest hit is 42. I have never had a hit in the 40's with my ranged equipped (ever). It could still be the whole randomness thing, but it sure doesn't seem like it.
