black and white are NOT colours, they're the absence of and the presence of all colours respectively. In terms of pencils, shades is correct.

It is a colour if it's got all other colours in it stupid iv'e been doin' this in my science lessons at school. and i got top maks in my test for it cause i got every question right!!!
8) Also i got top marks on my test for light and stuff like that.
