In any base > 2, 1+1=2 [ exception base 2 where 1+1=10 ]
In any modulo n, where n>2, 1+1=2 [exception modulo 2 where 1+1=0]
I hope my memory doesn't play tricks on me, it's been quite some years since highschool.

this is the version I remember from high school (the '2' next to the X means squared):
x = y
-x2= -xy
x2 - y2 = x2 - xy
(x + y)(x - y) = x(x - y)
x + y = x
1 + 1 =2
2 = 1
