Just in case you hadn't thought about it...
If you attack someone by mistake (attacked them when online is a good example) and you have already started the attack, you can use your fists until you stalemate (note: They will still be using their weapons, so make sure you will be able to beat them.).
If you attack someone and you beat them, you can always buy them stim packs to get them out of the hospital (if you can afford it).
