Is there a reason to have both a melee and a ranged weapon? I currently have one of each but am wondering if there's any point in having both when you only attack with one..

I'm not sure what others will say but I think you should choose one or the other and then concentrate your training on that. Also since the game randomly chooses which you defend with IF you have both equipped I would only have one or the other equipped.
For example you have only ranged equipped you defend with ranged.
you have only melee equipped then you defend with melee.
If you have both equipped you dont know which one is used when defending.
