What is it good for? Is it needed for any upgrades or anything like that?
As far as I know the only thing you get is random discounts when traveling between districts based on Rep, also from the wiki:

Every level opens up a new gym trainer.

chool or by using career points (which will be discussed later). Reputation is an attribute that allows you access to a better gym trainer. Gym trainers are expensive administrators that can be used in the gym, and when you can not afford a new house, are good to use for a boost to your gym training. If you have the option of using a $5 gym trainer and have 7 energy to train, it will cost you $35 to use the trainer fully. The benefits are not very significant with the low trainer and a small house, but increase your reputation to see how beneficial they can be!
any money spent on gym trainers is better off going into endurance. you can pay over and over for a small train bonus, or just buy endurance which last forever........ only worth it when a gymboree day comes around.

Unless you already have high endurance, i spend about 60k a day on trainers.
