Reading about the bar made me think of this.
We could have a lounge area, where we could chat in real time (ok, so it is just a chat room, but lounge sounds nicer)

that would be really cool. Kingdom of Loathing has a nice setup like that, a sidebar next to you game stats and action area, etc with a small java chat.
